Never-before-seen footage of the now-extinct Tasmanian tiger has been released, showing the dog-like predator pacing its cage in 1935.
The 21-second, black-and-white clip, digitized and released by the National Film and Sound Archive in Australia, is the last known footage of a thylacine, an Australian mammal declared extinct in 1936.
It shows Benjamin, with his long snout and striped back, in his enclosure at the now-closed Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart.
The clip is part of a 1935 travelogue called “Tasmania the Wonderland” that was likely filmed by Brisbane filmmaker Sidney Cook. The footage features sound and has no credits.
